REGINA -- Taj Smith is staying put. The lanky receiver re-signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thursday. Smith was scheduled to become a free agent at noon ET on Feb. 15. Smith, 30, is entering his third season with Saskatchewan. The six-foot-one, 198-pound receiver had a team-high 78 catches for 1,007 yards and seven TDs last year. "Taj is a pretty big part of what we do, obviously," general manager Brendan Taman told reporters. "He was very committed to being here and Jeremy (assistant GM Jeremy ODay) did a lot of great work behind the scenes to get it done.
CALGARY - The Calgary Stampeders signed free-agent import kick returner and running back Jock Sanders on Tuesday. Sanders, 25, spent the past two seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders after making his CFL debut with the B.C. Lions in 2011. "Jock is a dynamic and versatile player who has been a threat both on special teams and on offence during his time in the CFL," said Stampeders coach and general manager John Hufnagel in a release.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants safety Will Hill was suspended for six games Friday by the NFL for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. Hill has failed three drug tests since 2012, and he lost an appeal for the latest infraction. He will be eligible to return on Oct. 13. Hill was suspended for violating the performance enhancers policy two years ago, missing four games. He then missed the first four matches last season because of a substance abuse violation. The Giants are expected to release Hill when his latest suspension ends.

NEW YORK -- The New York Rangers agreed to terms with free-agent forward Nick Tarnasky. The 29-year-old centre had 13 goals, nine assists and 144 penalty minutes in a career-high 76 games last season for Montreals Hamilton affiliate in the American Hockey League. The deal with the Rangers was announced Thursday. Tarnasky also led Hamilton in penalty minutes and tied for fifth on the team in goals and power-play tallies (four). In 245 career NHL games during five seasons with Tampa Bay, Nashville, and Florida, Tarnasky has 13 goals, 17 assists and 297 penalty minutes.

Eden Prairie, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Minnesota Vikings linebacker Desmond Bishop was placed on injured reserve with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Vikings coach Leslie Frazier had announced Monday that Bishop suffered the injury in Sundays 35-10 loss to the Panthers. Bishop missed all of the 2012 season with the Green Bay Packers due to a hamstring injury. He spent his first six seasons with the Packers. Minnesota signed wide receiver Rodney Smith to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. Safety Brandan Bishop was signed to the practice squad.
