DALLAS -- Houston centre Dwight Howard has been fined $25,000 for throwing the ball into the stands late in the Rockets loss in Dallas. Howard tossed the ball into the seats while turning toward the court, drawing a technical foul with 2:54 remaining in the game Wednesday night. The NBA announced the fine Thursday. The Rockets were ahead 116-111 at the time, and Dirk Nowitzki made the free throw to get Dallas within four. The Mavericks, who trailed by 18 in the third quarter, later went on a 9-1 run to end the game and earn a 123-120 come-from-behind win.

WASHINGTON -- Andrew Dykstra earned a shutout in his first MLS start in nearly four years and D.C. United snapped a 15-match winless streak with a 2-0 victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday night. Substitute Chris Rolfe scored in second-half stoppage time to ensure the victory after United (1-2-1) went ahead late in the first half on an own goal by New England defender Jose Goncalves. It was Uniteds first win of the season and Rolfe scored his first goal of 2014 after being traded from the Chicago Fire this week. Uniteds winless streak dated to last August.

ATLANTA -- The Philadelphia Phillies have placed outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. on the bereavement list. Gwynns father, Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, died of cancer Monday. He was 54. Gwynn Jr. is hitting .155 in 52 games. He paid tribute to his father on his Twitter account: "Today I lost my Dad, my best friend and my mentor. Im gonna miss u so much pops. Im gonna do everything in my power to continue to... make u proud!" The team recalled outfielder Aaron Altherr from Double-A Reading before Monday nights game at the Braves.
NEW YORK, N.Y. - The NBA fined Clippers head coach Doc Rivers $25,000 on Thursday for publicly criticizing the officiating in Los Angeles 105-104 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder earlier this week. Rivers was livid after the game, saying the Clippers were "robbed." The Clippers believed the Thunders Reggie Jackson had knocked the ball out of bounds with 11.3 seconds remaining, but officials ruled it Oklahoma City ball. After going to replay, the call stood, and the Thunder rallied to win the game.

The NCAA drops the puck today on their mens hockey tournament and there will be no shortage of Canadians on the ice as 16 teams try to make their first step to becoming National Champions. The tournament includes a total of 109 Canadian players. There are 35 players from Ontario, 35 from British Columbia, 18 from Alberta and seven each from Quebec, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
