A ton of Premier League football and a partridge in a pear tree. In reality, it’s three games in just seven days as the fixtures come fast and furious over the festive season. Christmas provides an appropriate break to reflect upon what’s transpired. My gift for you this holiday season: 12 Premier League thoughts before Christmas. Season’s Greetings. 1) Goal scorers and attacking players largely get the majority of acclaim for top performances. BROSSARD, Que. -- Goalie Carey Price and defencemen Andrei Markov and Alexei Emelin werent on the flight when the Montreal Canadiens left Tuesday to face the Blackhawks in Chicago. Coach Michel Therrien said he will give the three players a rest ahead of the NHL playoffs. The Canadiens play Wednesday night in Chicago and return home to face the New York Islanders on Thursday night before ending the regular season Saturday against the New York Rangers. "At this stage, a lot of players are dealing with little bumps," said Therrien.
The Winnipeg Jets won 37 games last season, and the franchise hasnt won more than that since 2006-2007 in Atlanta, the last -- and only -- time that they have reached the playoffs. Off-Season Game Plan looks at a Jets team that has an interesting core, a new coach and a problem between the pipes. Many of Winnipegs core players are in their twenties, in and around their prime years, so while thats reason for optimism, its also reason for some urgency to take advantage of the kind of production being provided by the likes of Andew Ladd, Blake Wheeler and Dustin Byfuglien.
ATLANTA -- The officials were allowing aggressive, physical play, so the Grizzlies turned up the defensive pressure against Atlanta while setting an NBA record with only one free throw attempt. Zach Randolph scored 20 points and the Grizzlies set a low-scoring pace in shutting down the Hawks 79-76 Saturday night. Memphiss one free throw attempt is the record low since the shot-clock era was introduced in 1954-55, according to STATS. Memphis players were astonished to see only one free throw on their stat line. "Wow! Wow! Wow!" Randolph said.
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Detroit Tigers had seen enough from their shaky bullpen to know something had to be done. So the AL Central leaders acquired right-hander Joakim Soria. "Obviously, Im excited to have Joakim on the team," manager Brad Ausmus said Thursday before the Tigers began a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels.
EASTBOURNE, England -- Feliciano Lopez of Spain completed a successful title defence when he beat top seed Richard Gasquet of France 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-5 in the Aegon International final on Saturday. Madison Keys earned her first career WTA title by beating Angelique Kerber of Germany 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in the womens final.
David Hearn finished up his first Open Championship in style, rolling in a birdie putt on the final hole to finish the week at 3-under. It was a solid week for the Canadian golfer and one from which hell take a great deal of confidence. "I felt like I was real close all week," he said after signing for a 1-under 71.
